Announcing the Release of Direct Instruction Additions

April 24, 2006

For over 30 years, Discover Intensive Phonics has taught hundreds of thousands of children to read. In elementary schools nationwide, students of all ability levels have advanced several grade levels using this revolutionary approach. Through direct instruction, logical sequencing and multi-sensory techniques, it accomplishes the primary goal of phonics instruction: learning to recognize words rapidly and automatically.

In our ongoing effort to ensure reading success for all students, we have just released new additions to the direct instruction materials for the Grades 1-3 Intensive Phonics Teacher's Kit. You’ll love everything that’s new, from additional Reverse Listening Cards to book sized vocabulary controlled Little Books, but most of all you’ll love the thing that hasn’t changed—the most effective explicit, systematic phonics program available—Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself!

New Direct-Instruction Additions:

  • Little Books. One set of four books containing 32 vocabulary controlled stories. These “Little Books” provide students with practice and application of the skills learned in their phonics lessons.
  • Sound Essentials Manual. The expanded teacher friendly format now includes a new manual, Sound Essentials, containing materials for reinforcement, enrichment and activities, practice pages, revised games and activities, black-line masters and a new Word Builder for letter identification, word formation, and phoneme manipulation and substitution.
  • Phonemic Awareness Supplement. Phonemic-awareness lessons and assessments have just made the best phonics supplement available even better! The newly revised Discover Intensive Phonics Teacher’s Manual contains seven phonemic awareness lessons, a complete student assessment of phoneme awareness, and whole class assessments of skills taught throughout the course.
  • In addition to a comprehensive glossary of terminologies, the Phonemic Awareness Supplement, included as a preface to Lesson 1 in the Teacher's Kit, contains many ideas for phoneme manipulations, such as: phoneme elimination, blending, sound isolation, phoneme sequencing, phoneme count, phoneme deletion, syllable deletion, sound to word matches, and more. Seventeen games and activities are provided for reinforcement.
