Reading Horizons Helps the BBCS Address Adult Literacy

By Alan D. Goodman, Executive Director - BBCS, February 2009

A computer-based adult literacy initiative in several programs is helping clients become job-ready, gain greater independence and enhance their integration in the community.

The initiative uses an approach called "Reading Horizons." It is designed to bring fast gains in reading levels through a combination of educational software and direct instruction. The software has an audio component through which clients can learn the sound of letters, practice what they have learned in class, and even take tests and review their scores.

The ability to tailor each computer session to the literacy needs of individual clients is of particular importance to the Brooklyn Bureau, whose adult clients are diverse in their learning challenges.

For example, the developmentally disabled adults in the initiative have reading levels that range from Grade 1 to Grade 8. Additional challenges-such as speech deficits-may also be present. Despite such obstacles, staff report clients are learning and participating enthusiastically.

"They love it!," said Regina Davila, Site Trainer in the Bright Lights day habilitation program.

"In class they participate and eagerly raise their hands to answer questions. You see their enthusiasm and a strong will to learn."

Dianne Barry, Counselor in the Pre-Vocational program says a "contagious enthusiasm" takes place among their 28 adult clients as they participate in the weekly classroom lessons and practice sessions in the 3rd floor Computer Lab of the main office.

The open expression of happiness by one client making progress is rapidly shared by the rest. "It's like a domino effect," she said. "Everyone is happy."
