In an actual teaching sequence, additional skills will be taught throughout the phonetic skills. Following Phonetic Skill #2 the suffixes – ing, - ed, - er and – est are taught along with how to properly spell a word when adding the endings.
Words that follow Phonetic Skill #1x">Phonetic Skill #1: with one guardian consonant, double it and add the suffix. For Phonetic Skill #2: words with two guardian consonants, just add the suffix. Having students underline the suffixes will help them to distinguish suffixes from words that already contain an –ing ending.
One consonant students need to watch for is the letter ‘x’. Because x already has two sounds, ‘k’ and ‘s’, it doesn’t need to be doubled when adding a suffix.
Words that follow Phonetic Skill #3: just add the ending. Words that follow Phonetic Skill #4: just drop the silent e and add the suffix. When adjacent vowels come in the middle of a word like with Phonetic Skill #5: just add the ending.
