The direct instruction materials provide a variety of adaptable ELL application to enhance Reading Horizons instruction. An ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Supplement provided at the back of the manual addresses how Reading Horizons instruction can reinforce instruction in self-directed learning, comprehension, pronunciation, and grammar. Specific ESOL resources and application activities include the following:

• A Self-Monitoring Guide for pronunciation that demonstrates sample worksheets that can be customized to help students self-evaluate their pronunciation.
• Pronunciation Guides that show graphics and provides helpful explanations of how to articulate the 42 sounds in English
• A correlation between the 42 sounds and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
• Minimal Pairs Exercises to help students practice and improve their pronunciation and discrimination of the sounds of English.
• A Word Stress Predictability guide to teach students how to predict word stress of new vocabulary.
• A Dictionary Skills resource to help students learn how to use a dictionary appropriately when learning new vocabulary.
• A Parts of Speech supplement to enhance students' capacity to use English vocabulary beyond the word level.

In addition, ESOL notes are provided in tabbed sections throughout the manuals to provide ELL-teaching tips. These notes can be adapted to reach various levels of English language learners.

The English Language Enhancement is a consumable resource for ELL students to supplement their learning of vocabulary, pronunciation, and culture while using the Reading Horizons program. Students engage in various vocabulary strategies that can be practiced and self-evaluated to help students learn which vocabulary strategies work best for them. Students are then encouraged to implement these strategies while working with the Reading Horizons material to enhance their vocabulary development. Students also learn how to self-monitor their pronunciation as they are provided opportunities to practice and evaluate their pronunciation while using Reading Horizons program. Finally, students are provided a resource that orients them to cultural applications to enhance their learning of English.
